It was a waterlogged weekend for Vectis RFC youth rugby, with two squads travelling to the mainland for fixtures that highlighted both the club’s developing talent and its rapidly growing player base. These fixtures were saved by 4G pitches, whilst the rest of Vectis were saved by using the 3G pitches at Queensgate primary school.
Under 15s: A Squad Reborn
Result: US Heathens 5 – 0 Vectis RFC Player of the Match: Josh
The Vectis U15s travelled to Portsmouth to face US Heathens in what turned out to be an incredibly tight physical battle. While the Islanders narrowly lost 5-0, the scoreline was secondary to the significant milestone the match represented for the squad.
Just twelve months ago, the age group struggled to field a full team. In stark contrast, Vectis travelled today with a strong squad of 21 players, supported by 21 parents on the sidelines. The squad included players brand new to the game, as well as athletes taking advantage of cancelled football fixtures to turn out for the rugby club.
Despite the narrow defeat, the mood is celebratory.
"Score aside, it finally feels like we’re getting a squad together," said a team representative. "What has been so amazing is the contrast to a year ago when we were rarely able to scrabble a team together. To take 21 boys over today was a fantastic achievement."
Special mention goes to Josh, who was named Player of the Match for a standout performance in a gritty defensive effort.
Under 10s: Energy and Enthusiasm at Havant
Vectis U10s enjoyed a fabulous morning at Havant RFC for a friendly round-robin event.
The session was played in a non-competitive format, prioritising player development and game time.
The atmosphere was welcoming and positive, providing the perfect environment for the young Islanders to test their skills.
There was high energy, the team showed total commitment against mainland opposition. Two brand-new players made their debut, integrating seamlessly into the squad and putting in great performances and everyone had fun.
"These friendly round-robins are a fantastic introduction to more competitive rugby whilst keeping a very friendly atmosphere," Allan head coach noted. "Everyone had fun, and we look forward to more matches and tournaments in the next few months."
Vectis Volunteer Day.
Off the pitch, Vectis RFC is looking to build on momentum by inviting the local community to a Volunteer and Coaches Information Day. The event will take place at Network Ryde on Saturday, 7th February, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. This open invitation is extended to anyone who loves the game or simply wants to give back to the community, whether they are experienced coaches, former players, or parents who have never set foot on a rugby pitch before.
The event is a relaxed, no-pressure environment where attendees can learn about coaching roles and the various volunteer positions that keep the club running. It will also provide a meet and greet opportunity for the Vectis committee and share important information about the club for all its current volunteers. Vectis RFC provides comprehensive training and support for all volunteers, focusing on the vital role they play in helping young people aged 5 to 18 develop confidence, teamwork, and athletic skills on the Isle of Wight.
Refreshments will be provided for all who attend. Those interested are encouraged to drop the club a message via social media or simply turn up at Network Ryde on the morning of the 7th to grab a cuppa and discover how they can make a difference.
See you there!
