Match Reports
Colts Face Tough Opener After Delayed Start
In the Hants U18 Division 2 opener this Sunday, Vectis faced a challenging fixture against E&R. Enforced delays, a lack of pre-season contact rugby due to baked summer pitches, and two venue changes meant the game was ultimately played at Ventnor's Watcombe Bottom.
Vectis got off to a good start but were pinned back from the kick-off. Despite heroic tackling, good early rucking, and counter-attacks from their own 22m, they struggled to clear their lines. Ten minutes in, E&R capitalized to take a 12-0 lead.
Vectis eventually found space, putting together powerful combinations through centres George Cowell and Milo Fell. A massive thrust from Cowell found great support on the outside, sending powerful new No. 8 Freddie Hiom crashing through two defenders to score left of the posts. Tom Chamberlain slotted a fine conversion to bring it to 12-7.
Despite gallant defensive efforts, E&R’s polished wide play and astute kicking proved too much, with their left winger scoring a hat-trick to help the visitors to a 59-7 win. However, there were plenty of positives to take from the team's first contact game.
Player of the Match: George Cowell
U16s Show Grit and Determination in Season Opener
The Under 16s kicked off their league campaign away against US Heathens at US Portsmouth. Although the match ended in a narrow 12–0 defeat, the defensive effort was outstanding. Superb tackling and disciplined ruck work kept the hosts scoreless going into the half-time break. Though two second-half tries from the opposition proved the difference, Coach Glenn McGinness praised the squad’s immense physicality and team cohesion.
Vectis U15s Show Character in Tough Gosport & Fareham Battle
It was a challenging outing for the U15s, facing relentless pressure away at Gosport & Fareham RFC. After a difficult first half, the defining story unfolded right after the interval. Rallying under the exceptional leadership of George Pim, Vectis came out with renewed energy, dominating territory and putting real heat on the Gosport defense. The boys head back into training with heads held high!
U13s: What a Brilliant Way to Kick Off the Season!
The U13s traveled to Eastleigh RFC, fielding two full squads—the Chiefs and the Warriors. The Chiefs leveled the scores at 3-3 by halftime courtesy of Harry Hooper and a double from Albert Branston. In the second half, the Warriors came out firing with tries from Finn Simpson, Joe Anderson, and a clean finish by Isaac Braham, holding firm for a deserved 6-5 victory.
